Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale

By: Holly Black

Holly black is the author of the book I read. She was born in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1971. Her first novel was Tithe: A modern Faerie Tale. She then wrote two other books in the same world as Tithe. Valient and the Sequel to the Tithe, Ironside which spent five weeks on the New York Times bestseller list (Holly Black website). She also collaborated on the works of The Spiderwick Chronicles with Tony DiTerlizzi. She is known as the bestselling author of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Holly now lives in Massachusetts with her husband. In their house they also have a "secret Library". Which she states is “her favorite part of her house"(Holly blacks website)

In the novel I just read there are many symbols. Some of these symbol being as little as a four leaf clover to being as simple as a name. Each thing big or small symbolizes something. In this novel symbols go a long way. Without the symbols the story would probably make little to no sense at all. Not only would that but with out all the symbols in this novel the book be very boring and plain. In general the book might have a good amount of symbols.

Each symbol represents different things though out the story. I think the most fascinating symbol of the whole book would be a person’s name. In the book the knowing the name of a faire means you’re able to control them. They need to obey your every command. You see this chapter 10 when Kaye uses Roiben's full name to get free. "" Rath Roiben Rye"..."Cut my bonds."" Without Kaye knowing Roiben full name she couldn't have commanded him to break her chains. So a name plays a big role in this novel.

Another symbol would be the four-leaf clover. In the novel Kaye is truly a faerie and finds out in a later chapter. The reason she didn’t know she was a faerie is because they had put a disguise on her that they call "Glamour". In other to take this glamour off she needs to find a four- leaf clover. So the four leaf clover symbolizes her from the faerie. It separates her from the rest of the world in a sense. Even though she is told not to take her glamour off she still chooses to do so. Not only is that but four - leaf clovers very hard to find so she just starts rolling a pile of clovers. Also symbolize how unique she is.

I think by far this is great novel the way the author wrote it was just amazing. She used lots of symbols and imagery to catch the reader’s attention. I look forward to reading more books by this author. She did a great job with the entire symbols she put in. Symbol in a novel are very important without symbols novels would be very bland and boring. I am glad this was a great novel to read.

  2. Hi I'm Ray. I will be your evaluator this morning.
What has the author done well? What stands out to the reader?
What stands out to me is the description. You describe the book and the background of the author pretty well

Is the draft complete? What needs to be done today to get it to the next level by the end of class?
no the draft is not complete but to be fair you just started im sure it will come along nicely.

Is the discussion of the work detailed? Can you “see” what is happening in the story?
i dot see what is going on in the story it needs to be written down

Is the language clear? What problems do you see?
In the second paragraph there are some grammatical errors but my main concern is the beginning paragraph it sounds as if it is a rearrangement of a wikipedia page I think at the very least you should cite the page that you took the information from or I could be wrong I'm just saying.

  4. What has the author done well? What stands out to the reader?

Good introduction and beginning of the story. I would like to know what the next paragraph will be like.

Is the draft complete? What needs to be done today to get it to the next level by the end of class?

No it is not complete. It is too short and no details were given. Mostly only the introduction was given.

Does the draft conform to the assignment? Why or why not?

Yes it is a good beginning.

Are the elements of the critrical approach (i.e. Monomyth/Hero’s Quest, Symbolism, Psychology, etc.) clearly defined and then examined in the work of choice?

The approach was not given in the introduction, so I do not know what will be written about other then symbolism. Could this be a beginning to a New Criticism essay?

Is the discussion of the work detailed? Can you “see” what is happening in the story?

A summary of the story was not given in the story so I cannot see what is going on in the story.

Is the language clear? What problems do you see?

The language is clear and accurate.

Does the author cite their sources properly (everyone should at least cite their story)? If in doubt, Google search a few passages.

No. You should atleast cite your story!
